Professional Information
My name is Joel Solomon. I’m originally from Philadelphia, PA. I moved to Denver in 1987. I graduated from Temple University in 1987 with a BA in Communications and Theater. I’ve worked for several radio stations, including WRTI 90.1 FM in Philly, and KDEN, KHOW, KNUS, and KUVO in Denver.
After several years working in radio, I decided to switch careers and become a teacher. I received my teaching certification from the University of Denver in 1993, and taught 4th and 5th grade for 6 years in Aurora and Cherry Creek School district.
I then took a job as a Technology Specialist at Sagebrush Elementary in 2001. After 3 years at Sagebrush, I enrolled in a Masters Program at the University of Colorado at Denver, and received a Masters Degree (MA) in Information and Learning Technologies in 2004.
Since then, I have been working as an Instructional Technology Coach for Cherry Creek Schools. I travel between five elementary schools, helping and supporting teachers in their use of technology with students. The responsibilities of an Instructional Technology Coach include:
- Provide school based professional development that addresses the school improvement goals
- Support classroom teachers
- Mentoring
- Coaching
- Team teaching
- Providing resources
- Planning lessons and units
- Facilitate school-based Professional Learning Communities
- Coordinate the writing of the school tech plans
- Evaluate the professional development needs of schools and individual teachers
- Provide instructional leadership for schools
- Communicate the district vision for technology integration based on research and best practice
Most of the pages on JoelSolomon.com were created usingDreamwevear. However, I’ve recently begun including pages created with iWeb, too. iWeb is part of the iLife suite of applications available for the Mac. The good thing about iWeb is that adding podcasts and subscribing is very easy. The bad thing about iWeb is that most of the pages it creates cannot be modified, and HTML coding is difficult to customize.
CSS is also being used on many of the sites I’ve created for business clients. CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) allows me to change the overall appearance of a website without having to open each individual page. The design for my site is based on an original design from FullAhead.org. Their design is “open source” so I was free to customize and use, as long as credit is given to the author.
Personal Information
I live in Denver, Colorado with my wife, Leah, and son Jacob. Leah and I have known each other since 1997, and were married in 2004. We have two cats, Chelsea and Levi, and two fishtanks that houses Petey the Parrotfish, and several varieties of angelfish and mollies.
My hobbies include music, skiing, and playing softball. I play softball two nights a week during the Spring, Summer, and Fall. I’m an avid baseball fan, and when I’m not playing softball, I’m attending Rockies games at Coors Field as much as possible during the summer.
Thanks for visiting!
